The modern avatar of the abaya
Nishtha | Mar 2 2009

While the moral police and the clerics continue to debate over conservative ethics, women in Saudi Arabia are going all out and experimenting with the abaya. Shunning the many endless yards of the boring black that ruled the scene for quite a few years, Saudi women are experimenting with the modish, well-fitting versions, ornately embellished with sequins, crystals, beads, ribbons, studs, glitter, buttons, lace, leather tassels and even feathers. Much in demand these days is the double-layered sheer chiffon abaya, which shows the beautiful silk lining inside. Other stylish ones resemble funky kimonos, which are often worn open, revealing jeans and sometimes even shorts. A lot of fashion bucks are also being spent on stilettos and fragrances that convey a hell lot about a woman’s taste and personality. The generation is in fact bringing about a slew of changes that are redefining Saudi women.

We have lots of these kinds of fashionable abaya in my country. Some are beautifully designed based on our tradition so it has an ethnic touch. You should see them.
