If you thought global warming and climate change are distant phenomena happening in the Arctic, think again. It may reach closer home. With weather worldwide becoming warmer and more unpredictable the concept of seasonal collections in the fashion industry may be on its way out soon.
Recently, a prolonged spell of summer in New York led to poor sales of autumn clothes. The founding father of Milan Fashion, WeekBeppe Modenese said,
The whole fashion system will have to change. [It] must adapt to the reality that there is no strong difference between summer and winter anymore.
The gradual but discernable change in climate is blurring the lines between summer, winter and fall. Radley Horton, a climatologist at Columbia University’s Center for Climate Systems Research said,
There are less extreme differentials between seasons.
Spring is early by seven to 10 days, while fall is getting delayed by about a week.
Fashion houses are preparing for an overhaul in the way the industry functions, right from the kind of fabrics used to marketing strategies.Fashion designers are now shifting to “seasonless garments” that can be worn in any season.
Top fashion designers such as Giorgio Armani have taken climate change into consideration when designing clothes for emporio armani’s spring/summer collection 2007.
It may not be too long before woollens and furs become a thing of the past.If climate change continues at this pace mink coats may be the next mammoths of the fashion world.Perhaps this is reason enough to campaign for the good cause of saving both Planet Earth and Fall collections.
